Week of February 1, 2010

2ND SEMESTER SCHEDULE CHANGES FOR 8TH GRADE ONLY

To 8th Grade Families:

As we are about to start the second semester next week, we would like to make you aware of some schedule changes. Ms. Dobson, one of our Spanish teachers, has agreed to take on a new challenge for this next semester. It involves teaching a Spanish class for students who have not had the full three years at Athey or otherwise feeling unprepared for our usual 8th-grade Spanish experience.

Additionally, Ms. Dobson will be teaching an 8th-grade class, not related to Spanish, called “Community Service and Organizations.”  This class will allow students to connect with what non-profit organizations do in serving the needs of people in local communities. We know

Ms. Dobson will miss teaching 8th grade Spanish classes, but she is excited at this new opportunity to connect students with one of her personal passions.

Another 8th grade change is the flipping of class periods for Drama and Choir. For practical reasons, it makes better use of space for Drama to occur 5th period and Choir 6th period rather than the current configuration.

Finally, we are offering an elective class during period 5 for students who have struggled academically and need additional support as we head into the final semester of middle school. We will contact families indicating our desire for specific students to take advantage of this class with a certified staff member.

Of course these changes will create adjustments to many student schedules. It is possible that students expecting one teacher for an upcoming class will have a different teacher. We believe all our teachers are strong but understand such changes can be difficult for some students. We hope you provide your students with the message that the most important part of this upcoming semester and final one of the school year is to have strong study habits and good classroom participation.

Dan Schumaker
Assistant Principal

IMPORTANT REMINDER REGARDING BUS ROUTES AND BUS NOTES

If your student is to ride a different bus to school or home that is not his or her designated bus route, please provide a signed note giving your permission to do so.  Have your student come to the office so the note can also be signed and dated by one of the secretaries in the office.  This assures the bus driver that your student has permission to ride a different bus.  The safety and security of all students is a priority of the bus company and our staff.  It is very important students are riding the correct bus each day.  Thank you.

What About Boys?
National and local boys make up two-thirds of those in Special Ed classes.  They represent 70% of middle school and high school discipline referrals, and their dropping rates of graduation and college attendance are cause for concern. We know that relationships hold the key to improving boys’ health and academic performance. But how do we establish and maintain connections with boys? This workshop examines current data on boys in schools and their communities. Participants will learn about boys’ unique developmental issues and explore ways to enhance communication with boys.

The Census Questionnaire is a count of everyone living in the United States.
Achieving a complete and accurate Census is in our hands. In 2010, the U.S. Census Bureau will define who we are as a nation. The form is short, your answers are protected, and many benefits rely upon an accurate count. Help your community receive the funds it requires.

It’s Easy!
In 2010, every household will receive a short questionnaire that is simple and fast to complete and return.

It’s Safe!
Every Census Bureau worker takes an oath for life to protect the confidentiality of Census responses. By law, the Census Bureau does not share your answers with anyone. Not
even government agencies. Your answers are protected. Your identity is safe.

It’s Important!
Every year more than $300 billion in federal funds are awarded to states and communities based on census data. That’s more than $3 trillion over a 10-year period.

Census Day is April 1, 2010.

Girls Basketball Practice Schedule

Written by cooksonj
January 11th, 2010

Our season is quickly approaching.  Starting Jan. 19th the Athey Creek girls basketball season will be in full swing.  Practices on Jan. 19 will be after school for all grade levels from 3:50-5:10.

All girls wishing to play need to attend practice on Jan. 19th even if all their forms have not been turned in to the main office.  Important information will be given, as well as,  practices starting.  Our season is short so it is important for all girls to attend the first practice.  If you have another schedule conflict please let Mrs. Cookson know prior to practice.

6th grade parents:  All practices and home games take place at Stafford Elementary.  Coaches will escort the players to practice.  An activity bus will be available to take players home and will leave Athey at 5:15.  A coach will escort those players taking the activity bus back to Athey at 5:05.  If you plan on picking your daughter up from practice please do so at Stafford.

Our season will finish about the 2nd week in March.  Below is a schedule of practices for the first 2 weeks.  Once we have game schedules (based on teams per grade level) they will be posted and handed out to players.

Schedules:  Updates will be posted online.  Please keep in mind coaches will sometimes make last minute changes that won’t be posted.  They have the final word.

HOWARD HITON SPEAKS @ ROSEMONT RIDGE!

“What About Boys?”

January 21, 2010   6:30 pm
The last time Howard Hiton came to the Rosemont Ridge community, he filled the house with his dynamic and engaging presentation about his work with boys. Once again, Mr. Hiton is coming to Rosemont on January 21st, and Athey Creek parents are invited to this very special presentation.

National and local boys make up two-thirds of those in special ed classes, they represent 70% of middle school and high school discipline referrals, and their dropping rates of graduation and college attendance are cause for concern. We know that relationships hold the key to improving boys’ health and academic performance. But how do we establish and maintain connections with boys?
This workshop examines current data on boys in schools and their communities. Participants will learn about boys’ unique developmental issues and explore ways to enhance communication with boys.

Biography:   Howard Hiton is a Licensed Professional Counselor. He has been providing individual, family, and chemical dependency counseling services since 1987 in settings such as residential treatment for adjudicated boys, middle schools and high schools. He was the recipient of the Oregon Pediatric Society’s 1999 Award for Service to Children and the 2005 Oregon Peacemaker Award of Excellence for his support of youth.   Howard has been in private practice with a passion for boy’s issues since 1995. He has conducted focus groups with boys, facilitated young men’s support groups, led boys’ nights out and spoken to parent and professional audiences across the region on how to best nurture boys. He is the author of Building on Strengths, a report published by Portland Public Schools on improving boys’ school performance and a co-author of BAM! Boys Advocacy and Mentoring: Helping Boys Connect Through Physical Challenge and Strategic Storytelling, a Guidebook for Leading Boys Groups. Howard’s presentation style is consistently evaluated as being warm, engaging, and thought provoking.
Mr. Hiton is the father of two school-aged boys.
