Volunteers needed!  Dear Athey Creek Families,       The West Linn-Wilsonville Education Foundation is an independent nonprofit fundraising organization committed to preserving teaching positions in the WLWV School District. Last year, the Foundation gave the School District $150,000 to keep teachers in the classroom for the 2011-12 school year. Right now, decreased local option tax revenues mean that our School District once again is looking at overcrowded classrooms and less one-on-one time for teachers and students.

On May 20, the Foundation is gathering volunteers to phone parents, asking them to make tax-deductible donations to help offset budget cuts and limit the impact on our schools. Can you spare a couple of hours to join parents and teachers from throughout the School District, in reaching out to our community?

For more information or to volunteer, please contact Kate Hoots via email at katehoots@yahoo.com or by phone at (503)638-8323. To donate, please visit the Foundation website at www.wlwvfoundation.org. See the attached flyer.

The Athey Creek Cougar Run for Funds is finally here! Here’s the “snapshot”:

  • Your child may have brought home Friday or will bring  home Today an envelope with information regarding the PTSA-sponsored Cougar Run for Funds.
  • The Cougar Run is scheduled for May 18, and 100% of the proceeds will go toward the construction of a much-needed recreation/fitness area in the back of the school. The estimated cost from start to finish is close to $20,000 – that includes prepping the area as well as ordering and installing the equipment that students helped select.
  • Thanks to the community’s tremendous support of the PTSA’s recent Garage Sale, and other school funds designated by student groups, there is already $10,000 available
  • PTSA’s financial commitment to this project means that we will be able to start prepping the site this summer.  A successful fun run means this recreation/fitness area will be ready for kids to enjoy when they start back to school in the fall.  8th Graders will be leaving a legacy for future Athey students.
  • Please encourage your child to take the envelope the envelope and collect their pledges. Email friends and family and ask neighbors!  If every child brings in just $20 in tax-deductible pledges and donations, we can make this plan a reality by fall 2012.  Let’s work together to give our middle school kids a fun and safe place to play!

As we get closer to warmer weather, closer to the end of school, there’s a tendency of forgetting homework, forgetting where lunch boxes and backpacks are left, and leaving items in the gym locker rooms. Parents please talk to your students about their cell phones. It is important that they leave them in their lockers during the day and lock them in their gym lockers during track. We have cell phones turned into the office every day and know that they can be expensive to replace.

Get out the track shoes! Start the training! The Cougar Run for Funds is right around the corner! Friday, May 18th Athey students will run! Run! Run! during the school day to bring in funds for the Activity Fitness Center in the back of the school. Close to $25,000 is needed to fund the whole center – and the PTSA is hoping to work our way there through this great new event. Volunteers are needed for a variety of needs – “day of” and planning. **We’re also in need of a Sound System for music during the event. This is for music to be played outside around the track while the kids run. Speakers plugged into a player are needed.** Please contact Jen Butts 503 341-9588 or butts.jennifer@yahoo.com if you can offer time, energy and/or sound! Cougar Run poster.
